As summer begins to wind down a bit, our thoughts begin to change from week-long tours to perfect Sunday cruises. Several of us around here have had the chance to live with and enjoy BMW R75/5s over the years, and though they made and sold plenty of them in the U.S., prices seem to be rising steadily, making now the time to get your hands on one before they're all tucked away.
This R75/5 is a 1973 model, which means it could be either a short wheelbase or long wheelbase model, as BMW added 50mm to the length of the swingarm early in the 1973 model year to steady the bike and resolve a bit of "twitchiness" that testers of earlier /5 models had complained about.
Though this bike looks as though it has received a good amount of attention over the past few years, there's more work to be done. It sounds as though the back brake isn't working properly, and the speedometer cluster needs to be replaced or rebuilt. The auction doesn't give us any guess of how many miles are on the bike, but does mention that the engine was recently rebuilt, and that it has new carbs, new pipes, a new seat, new shocks and new tires. Depending on the auction reserve, this could be one heck of a deal.
